MAKE YOUR OWN GLASSES
You can easily make your own glasses, but it's important to use the correct
filter material. You may be able to get deep red and blue transparent film
at an art or craft supply shop, but the surest source is a supplier of stage
lighting filters ("gels"). Lee Filters (Central Way, Walworth Industrial
Estate, Andover, Hampshire SP10 5AN, UK; tel 01264 366245) makes a wide
selection. Lee #132 (medium blue) and #106 (primary red) or #182 (light
red) will work well.
If you can't obtain them locally, you can order a single set of filters by
sending a check or international money order for US$2 to Ernest Ruckle,
13 Parnell Street, Waterford, Ireland. Payment may also be made at the
current rates of exchange in the currencies of the EU, Canada, Japan,
Switzerland, and Australia. (Sent by air mail. Add $1 for each additional
set.)
If you order the Stereopticon Expansion Code (see {[A15,0,7]INSTALLING AND EXPANDING}),
you'll receive a free set of filters.
This {[P06,4,7] diagram } shows the suggested dimensions of a pair of Stereoptic glasses
large enough to fit over most regular glasses. You can also use the diagram
to test filter materials.
If you have a 14-inch monitor and a PAL (European) system, the templates
shown in the diagram will be close to actual size, and you'll be able to
trace them directly off the screen. If the yellow box around the diagram
isn't the size indicated, you may be able to adjust your monitor's hori-
zontal and vertical sizes. If you're using an NTSC (American) monitor, only
the horizontal screen dimensions will be correct.
Use tracing paper and a soft fine-point marker. You need only make a dot at
each angle, then transfer the image to a piece of light cardboard (black is
best) by pushing a pin through each dot. Then connect the pin-pricks with
a ruler and pencil. Cut out two center pieces and two ear pieces.
Cut red and blue filters, each 4.2 by 2.7cm. Cut narrow strips of double-
sided tape and place them on one center piece as shown in the diagram.
Center the filters over the eye holes (red for left eye, blue for right) and
place them carefully over the tape. Carefully align the other center
section over the first one and press them firmly together. Stick on the ear
pieces with more tape.
ADJUSTING YOUR MONITOR: When your glasses are ready, look through them at
this {[P04,4,7] picture }. Turn down the brightness control until the dark sides of the
space rocks are ALMOST as dark as the black background. Then turn up the
contrast until the picture looks bright. When you look at a picture with a
white background, such as {[P08,4,7] this one }, just turn down the brightness until the
darkest color looks almost black.
